Zheng Wei’s works have always focused on TEXTURE, the series of old photos were all about the texture of time and death; the series of GIVE ME SOME IDEAS were pursuing the texture of wisdom, but this time Zheng Wei’s solo exhibition Nails on the Board is a show which maximized the texture of the medium of his works. The new medium Zheng Wei is using does not just show his creation finally done, but also the visual effects which can truly deeply reflect the meanings he wants to express.
Graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts; printmaking department, Zheng Wei finds the way he creates prints is not only his art style, but also his creating theory. No matter what types of prints to be made, the process always necessarily includes master board production, printing, debugging and etc. During the whole process, master board as a basis, is the most important part, but also the easiest to be neglected. In this exhibition, Zheng Wei directly recreated on wooden board, which gives the works an effect of prints, and cross over the boundaries of prints and oil paintings. Zheng Wei’s wood carving shows the special effect of oil painting, a three dimensional space was created when the metal penetrated the wooden board; it ambiguously formed a tension between the space and the surface of the works. It certainly reached undefined types of art with very complicated visual effects. This effect implies an emotional violence, not through the images, but through the violence the art itself has to go through during the process of making art, which has won the truly shocking effect for the art works.
