问:白盒子艺术馆座落于包豪斯建筑风格为主的798艺术区里,如佩斯北京、林冠、时态空间、尤伦斯等。您是如何在这些著名的老建筑群中诠释白盒子艺术馆的建筑设计思想的?
答:白盒子艺术馆原址作为 798原有建筑的一部分,也是当时东德时期援助的老建筑。顾振清先生形容空间有着殿堂般的圣洁,从设计的初期,我们就确定保留原有建筑部分,而针对建筑之外的屋面及两翼进行了较大的扩容和改造。
原有的建筑外形在这次改造中,被新的形、势、态隐藏了起来,看起来很有意思。建筑外形呈现一个由方体渐渐转向圆体在建筑的直角处又由圆体转向方体的过程中结束,结构体外露、建筑质地朴实、建筑形式随十字路口、798管道为特质的环境而生。对于建筑形态我尝试隐喻一种过程性,不是设计性的、也非概念性,是时空转化的反映,亦或是朴实判断的结果。寻找存在的触觉感是这次白盒子建筑的尝试。
问:听说您是来自新疆的建筑设计师,这是您在北京的第一个建筑和室内设计项目,您能谈谈设计白盒子艺术馆对您有何重要的意义和不同吗?
答:很多国际设计师都在来中国的路上,有些已在中国做了很多重要的项目。我作为一个中国偏远的新疆设计师(严格意义上是室内设计师)来到北京798,完成一个重要的艺术馆建筑真有些忐忑不安和兴奋。同时要感谢投资方的信任和魄力,并且艺术馆的投入是在世界金融危机的大背景下开始的,祝愿艺术馆有美好的未来。
问:具我了解,您以前大多做商业设计,如新疆君邦天山大饭店、全聚德等。商业设计要考虑业主的商业利益 ,而艺术馆的设计,哪些因素是您重点考量的呢?
答:我想无论是商业性还是公众艺术性建筑项目,合理投入和可持续的运营,都应是设计师重要的考量内容。建筑自身的形态诉求是我考虑的重要因素,过程是两难的,需要坚持也需要妥协。坚持如水其志,妥协为其势。
问:您是怎样理解建筑和“艺术改变生活”的?
答:建筑和艺术是一体的,同是人类对世界表达看法和赋予愿望的一种载体和方式,无论世界处于单极还是多极期,我想建筑和艺术会是今后社会形态下影响人们价值趋向的重要形式。艺术已经在改变着我们。对于艺术馆的落成,愿她能成为798艺术区一个受大家关注的艺术馆。
An Exclusive Interview with Architect A Kang
Q: The White Box Art Museum is located in the 798 Art District of Beijing where the Bauhaus-style is the predominated architectural style, including the buildings of PACE Beijing, UCCA, Galleri Faurschou, and 798 SPACE. How do you incorporate your design with the existing and established architectural style?
A: The original site of The White Box Art Museum is a component of 798’s architectural complex that was designed and constructed by East German architects. In Mr. Gu Zhenqing’s words, they have the sublimity of temples. We had decided from the early stages of our planning that the original site will be kept, while the roofing and two wings will be expanded and remodeled. According to my design, the original architectural contour is concealed by the new forms. It has an interesting look now. The dominated cube shape gradually loses its edges as it slips into the right-angle, and then the soft edges turns stiff as it reaches the end. I exposed some of the interior structures as part of the visual façade. I adopt clear outlines, unpretentious material, and an accommodating gesture to the surrounding, especially the tube structures that 798 is famous for. To imply instead of indicating is my philosophy here. It is not a result of designing, nor conceptualizing, instead it is a result of improvising and reflecting. It is an austere manner. I am inspired by the sense of touch developed by feeling and following the objects and spirits.
Q: As an architect from Xinjiang province, this project is your first in Beijing. Could you like to talk about what The White Box Museum project means to you in particular?
A: Many international architects are on their way to China, many have already accomplished projects in here. As an architect, maybe more accurately an interior designer, that comes from such a remote area as Xinjiang, an important project such this excites me, while I also feel a bit nervous. I am deeply appreciative for trust and courage from the museum, especially considering this project happens during the backdrop of a world wide economical recession. I wish the museum the best of luck.
Q: Most of your previous projects have been primarily for commercial buildings, such as Xinjiang Junbang Tianshan Hotel and Quanjudei. Those are projects with commercial concerns. How do you approach differently to this museum project?
A: I think both commercial and public art projects demand reasonable budgets and sustainability. Architecture has it is own demands, even formally. The process always involves compromises and persistence. It is like the spirit of water, its means can be flexible, but its goal remains indomitable.
Q: What do you think is the relationship between the art of architecture and “Art Changes Life”?
A: Architecture and art are a whole. They are the medium and means for mankind to express opinions and developing aspirations. Weather considering a pluralistic or singular world perspective, architecture and art will be one of the important forms in effecting mankind’s decisions on values. Art is changing us. I hope The White Box Art Museum will receive attention in the 798 art community.
